Monuments and Churches

The Rione Celio contains within its boundaries what is considered worldwide the symbol of Rome: the Coliseum.
If you go beyond this and start to walk along the streets of the borough, you will find many "hidden treasures". Within a few minutes walk from the apartment you can admire some of the most interesting masterpieces in the history of Rome.

Here below, we propose an itinerary of about 2 km, starting from the apartment, that will help you to discover them.

From the apartment go down for Via Ostilia and, once in Via S. Giovanni in Laterano, just on your left is the remains of Ludus Magnus, the most important gymnasium for gladiators, while in the backyards you can admire the Coliseum.

Go back to your steps and continue on Via S. Giovanni in Laterano, going straight until you meet, on your left the Basilica of St. Clemente.
The Basilica is on 3 levels: 1) Roman houses and mitreo of the II century; 2) early Christian church IV century; 3) Basilica of the XII century (Frescos by Masolino from Panicale). Opening time, for the lower levels there is an entry fee of € 10,00;

turn right on Via dei Querceti and left on Via dei Ss. Quattro (uphill) until you meet, on your right the Church of Ss. Quattro Coronati. Give particular attention to the Cloister and the Oratory di St. Silvestro (to visit them you need to ask for the key to the nuns. Give a small donation is recommanded);

continue on Via dei Ss. Quattro until you reach Piazza S. Giovanni in Laterano, where is located the Basilica of St. Giovanni in Laterano. Apart from the beauty of the Basilica itself, it is recommended to visit the Cloister;

walk back and take Via S. Stefano Rotondo until you reach, on the left the Church of St. Stefano Rotondo (V century) the oldest with circular plant in Rome (frescos by Pomarancio);

go straight until Largo della Sanità Militare, turn left and after few meters you meet, on your right the Church of St. Maria in Dominica, with the fountain of the Navicella in front;

go back towards the Coliseum and after a few meters on the left you pass under the Arch of Dolabella and continue straight to arrive at the Church of Ss. Giovanni e Paolo;

leave the Church and keep going down, after few meters on the right there is the entrance of the Roman houses of the Celio 10/13 - 15/18 (closed Tues and Wed.); Tickets € 8 (under 18 over 65 - € 6), under 12 free: where you can admire parts of roman houses decorated with frescos of the III century a.C.;

You continue going down on the Clivo of Scauro and you get to the left to the Church of S. Gregorio Magno;

Further down you come to Via di S. Gregorio and 4 alternatives are possible:

  1. Turn left and again left heading towards the Baths of Caracalla
  2. Turn left and then right heading towards the Circus Maximus and the "Bocca della Verità"
  3. Cross Via S. Gregorio and visit the area of the Palatino
  4. Turn right heading towards the Arch of Constantine and the Coliseum
